The scammers contact the Medicare recipient by telephone and already know the Medicare patient's name and what medication he or she uses. The Caller ID number comes back to a local chain pharmacy. The scammer asks for personal information in exchange for adding them to the program. One Medicare patient reported being asked for her social security number.

The major chain pharmacies have advised Putnam County Sheriff's Office they do not solicit their customers by telephone and are not offering this program.

Any person who believes their personal information has been compromised may contact the Federal Trade Commission website or the desk officer at the Putnam County Sheriff's Office at 386-329-0844.
