Information Posted on Social Media Refuted by Investigation

Apr 28, 2016

Putnam County, FL: The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office wishes to address false and irresponsible information circulating on social media. Recently an individual posted false information on social media regarding alleged terrorist activity in the Florahome area of western Putnam County. The post, which has been shared numerous times, insinuated that members of a radical Muslim terrorists group were training and firing weapons on private property. According to dispatch records covering the past twelve months, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office has responded to this specific property for discharging firearms complaints four (4) times. During each response, Putnam County deputies have followed agency procedures and have thoroughly investigated the nature of the discharging. In every case, it has been determined that only lawful and safe recreation shooting is occurring on the private property, which is located in a rural area.

The sheriff’s Office has been able to determine the source of the initial false Facebook post. The individual making the post is the same individual who made all of the previous calls to law enforcement regarding the discharging. The same individual has been involved in an extended dispute with the owner of the property over land use restrictions and other civil matters.

SWAT Uses Tracked Robot to Locate Fugitive

Apr 22, 2016

Terrence ToblerPalatka, FL: The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office has arrested twenty-seven years old Terrance Tobler after a SWAT standoff lasting over four hours. Tobler was wanted on an active warrant for robbery with a firearm. Sheriff’s Major Crimes Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Tobler after determining his involvement in an armed robbery at the Black Hawk Internet Café in February. During the ongoing investigation, detectives learned that Tobler was hiding out in a mobile home at 3400 Balsam Street. At approximately 8:15 AM this morning, detectives and patrol deputies went to that home in an attempt to arrest Tobler. Deputies could hear people inside the residence talking and moving furniture in front of the doors in an apparent attempt to keep deputies out. When deputies were unable to get an answer at the door, Crisis Intervention Team negotiators were called to the scene. Negotiators were able to make contact with someone inside the home and learned that there was a pregnant woman and two small children inside with the suspect. After approximately an hour of negotiation, the negotiators were able to talk the woman, who is Tobler’s girlfriend, into coming out of the home with the children. Once the woman and children were safe, negotiators attempted to make contact with Tobler, but were unsuccessful. The SWAT and Rifle Security Teams were called to the scene and took over efforts to arrest Tobler. After additional efforts to contact Tobler failed, a robot equipped with multiple cameras and a two-way communicator was deployed. The robot located Tobler hiding under the mobile home and could see that he was not holding a weapon. Tobler spoke with deputies through the robot and agreed to surrender. A short time later, Tobler surrendered peacefully to SWAT Team members and was taken into custody without further incident. Tobler was booked into the Putnam County jail, where he is being held on a bond of $250,000.00
