May 17, 2017
Palatka FL: On Tuesday May 16, 2017 at approximately 5:00 pm, Putnam County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to 207 State Road 20 Palatka in reference to the report of a large brush fire. When they arrived, they determined the fire was started by 51-year-old Tina Marie Barnard who resides at that address. The investigation revealed Barnard started a fire to burn beer boxes in her back yard and then went inside leaving it unattended. The fire quickly spread to a wooded area adjoining her property, ultimately burning approximately five acres. Multiple fire departments deployed numerous pieces of heavy equipment and fought the blaze for over five hours before achieving containment. This morning May 17, 2017 Sheriff’s Office detectives obtained a warrant for Barnard’s arrest.
This afternoon (5/17/2017) Barnard was placed under arrest and transported to the Putnam County Jail where she was booked on one misdemeanor count of illegal burning and one misdemeanor count of reckless burning. Barnard is currently being held on a $2,000 bond.
In reference to the arrest Sheriff Gator DeLoach said “Only a fool would burn beer boxes or any trash for that matter during a burn ban. Barnard’s actions were reckless and placed lives and property in danger. While the brush fire may have been unintentional, her carelessness could have killed someone”.
Putnam County Fire and Emergency Services Chief, Quinn Romay said “The cooperation between Fire Services and the Sheriff’s Office has been outstanding. This arrest shows the seriousness of this incident and our dedication to protecting lives and property in our community”.
